Secret Recipe History
The journey of Secret Recipe began in 1997 with Dato’ Steven Sim, the founder, who surprisingly worked as a hairstylist.
He saw the market gap for cakes and cafes in his working area, Kuala Lumpur. It’s expected to be insulted or bullied when someone from a different background tries their hand at something entirely different.
In an interview with one of his family members, it was revealed that his initial companionship consisted of just five people.
It was really hard because people laughed at their shop, and some even shouted things like, Do you sell furniture?
The conditions for the first year were miserable. But nothing could break their spirit. Eventually, Steven also developed an inferiority complex and was about to lose hope.
In 1998, Sim pulled out a marble cheesecake from his fridge and put it in a random gourmet competition.
He never thought that his cake would one day win the first prize. In fact, that’s what happened in this unforeseen coincidence.
The business boomed from there, and Secret Recipe took part in many bakery competitions and won most of them clean.
Probably the most notable one happened in 2018 in Great Britain. One of his creations was showcased as Brand of the Year by the World Branding Forum in 2018 at Kensington Palace, London.
The experimentation continued as more and more stores were established throughout the country. Famous slogans like “Sweet Moments Together” were also created somewhere in between.
Secret Recipe didn’t just limit itself to in-house cakes. Instead, it took inspiration from other regions too. Japan, for example, is where the Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart Brand came from.
As one of the largest cafe chains in Malaysia, it was awarded Halal certification by Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia, or JAKIM for short.
Secret Recipe Review
Do you still have doubts regarding the Secret Recipe menu or prices 2025? Well, make sure to check out our second heading!
Secret Recipe now serves breakfast and lunch dishes along with their gourmet feast. So we just had to check one of these out.
First on the list is chicken Parmigiana. A super delicious chicken dish that is made with tender chicken thighs.
Topped with mozzarella cheese, tomato basil sauce, romaine lettuce, Japanese cucumber, cherry tomato, and a lot of other ingredients.
Get a side of potato wedges and garden salad for a complete meal. It’s an Asian-style meat dish that includes a good proportion of meat and veggies on one plate.
Who would’ve thought? At least our famous chicken outlets didn’t. And it’s always these Asian restaurants that serve in such large quantities.
It doesn’t even cost that much, and yet it includes everything from meat to vegetables. It is no surprise that it tastes fantastic.
The dry spices used are just perfect, and they managed to bring out a soothing flavor. Not too hot, not too salty, just a perfect dish—nothing more, nothing less.
Ever thought of having pasta with beef strips? Well, the next one is just that, and it goes by, Carbonara with Crispy Beef Strips.
A signature dish is carbonara sauce, cheese, beef strips, shimeji mushrooms, and, yeah, pasta in a unique creamy blend like you’ve never seen before.
Looks good, and smells good too! That’s the trait of a great dish that makes your mouth water even before it touches your tastebuds.
The flavors are terrific! Everything is on the spot, and the beef strips are fried well. Just the right amount of heat makes it crunchy enough with a bit of chewiness.
Final Thoughts
It’s not a surprise for a bakery to include some breakfast dishes over time. But only a few manage to take it to the next level.
I especially loved the chicken one. It had the best, juicy flavors. And the good part is the portion and the variation.
The salad, side dish, and main dish are all on one plate. It saves both time and effort to switch between multiple plates. Heck, you can literally eat it all without touching anything.
Unlike french fries or something else that requires some personal attention, it’s not the best way, but it works. At least this much is certain: Secret Recipe is the underdog and also quite underrated in this genre.
